CCL 2009-10 : Islanders paired against Canadian Champion
By: BoriQa | June 11th, 2009
The Puerto Rico Islanders will face the Canadian Champion in the preliminary round of the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League (CCL), as set in the draw today in New York.
The USL’s Vancouver Whitecaps and the MLS Toronto FC are still on the run for the 2009 Nutrilite Canadian Championship.
.
Vacouver leads Toronto in the Nutrilite standings 9 points to 6, while the defending 2008 Canadian Champion Montreal Impact (0 points in the tournament) is already eliminated.
The Montreal Impact has very good chances of spoiling Toronto FC’s CCL hopes for a 2nd year in a row. To win the Canadian Championship, Toronto FC needs not only to beat Montreal, but to beat them by at least 4 goals! Otherwise the Whitecaps will win the Championship on goals differential.
Toronto’s fate will be decided on June 18th in Montreal, Quebec. The 2008-09 CCL quaterfinalist Montreal Impact has struggled in the 2009 USL season, where they are in 6th place with a 3-2-4 [W-T-L] record, and have yet to score in three loses in this year’s Canadian Championship.
Should the Islanders defeat the Canadian Champion in the Preliminary round, the Puerto Ricans will play in Group C of the 2009-10 CCL, with an opportunity for revenge against the Mexican Cruz Azul (should they defeat Herediano from Costa Rica in the premifinals). The MLS Columbus Crew and Costa Rica’s Saprissa complete the group.
Group C
Columbus Crew (USA)
Saprissa (CRC)
Cruz Azul (MEX)-Herediano (CRC) winner
Canada Champion (Toronto FC or Vancouver Whitecaps)-Puerto Rico Islanders (PUR)
The 2008-09 CCL Semifinalist Puerto Rico Islanders had a very promising 2-2-0 [W-T-L] start this season, defeating both Canadian USL teams (Vancouver Whitecaps & Montreal Impact), then struggled losing 3 of their next 4 games (including one loss to the Whitecaps), and are now 4th in the USL standings with a 4-4-3 record.
The Puerto Rico Islanders and Vancouver Whitecaps rivalry that has been brewing since last year’s USL final is almost set.

Seems like we got a bit of rivalry going on here between our teams.
USL Final last year and now this (barring some TFC miracle).
It’ll be interesting to see what happens.

I really hope we beat TFC next week. I would love to see Vancouver face off against Puerto Rico…too bad it’s only the preliminary round…
Regardless, group C seems to be a relatively tough group…

Absolutely agree with both of you. I hope Montral beats Toronto (and I actually live in Toronto, but don’t tell anyone… hehehe). And I think the rivalry is now settled between Islanders and Whitecaps.
It is too bad though that both USL teams can’t progress the CCL in different paths like last year with the Impact.

All you nay sayers, including the guy from Toronto that is secretly supporting Montreal (your cover is blown dude)….
TORONTO WON!!!!… PUERTO RICO, you now have the priveledge of visiting the only truly “major” city in Canada by International standards (with 5 million + people)…
And the largest SSS in Canada BMO Field…. (sorry VanCity, you’ve got a beautiful town, but its a small town by International standards, they don’t even have a subway!!!)
DEEEE-ROOOOO!!!

6-1 TFC! Can you believe it! I’ve got tears in my eyes after last nights performance. Deja-vu for the Montreal Impact eh? Giving up 4 goals in the 2nd Half.
Vancouver has been eliminated, Toronto FC are Canadian Champions. But we cannot under-estimate Puerto Rico. The good news? Last I checked, the Whitecaps are the defending USL-1 Champs, not Puerto Rico, if we can knock out the Caps, PRL should be no match.
Now if only we can finish like last night.

Toronto didn’t knock out the Caps. Montreal did, by not playing! PRI’s 2009-10 CCL run starts with the first MLS team knocked out of the CCL. 4 MLS’ers to go…
