2009-10 CCL – Islanders 1:0 Toronto FC
By: BoriQa | July 29th, 2009
TFC probably regrets now not fullfilling their agreement to send their regulars to Puerto Rico during the pre-season when they had a chance to scrimmage the Islanders…
Still smarting from a heartbreaking decision against the Columbus Crew last weekend, Toronto suffered another major setback Wednesday night with a 1-0 loss to the visiting Puerto Rico Islanders in the first game of their CONCACAF Champions League Preliminary Round series at BMO Field.
Kendall Jagdeosingh turned 270 degrees near the line to the right of the goal after chasing a free kick by Jonathan Steele in the 67th to score the only goal of the match as the Islanders defeated Toronto FC 1-0 on the road.
It was the first game ever between a USL side and an MLS team in CCL history. The USL now leads 1-0-0 the MLS in the Champions League head-on series.
Toronto FC is now on the verge of elimination in CONCACAF’s showcase club tournament at the hands of the USL-1 Puerto Rico Islanders. The Islanders will take a 1-0 lead home to Juan Ramón Loubriel stadium in Bayamon (a.k.a. Central American Cemetery), where special arrangements are been made to bury the TFC among other prominent adversaries like Santos Laguna and Cruz Azul from Mexico, CD Marathon from Honduras and Liga Alajuelense from Costa Rica, among others.
It’s worth noting that the Puerto Rico Islanders have an alltime international record of 7-0-2 [W-T-L] at home, and that NO CONCACAF opponent has ever scored more than a single goal at “la Islandera”:
1. 0-1 loss against W Connection (TRI), 2007
2. 3-1 win against Hoppers (ANT), 2007
3. 1-0 win against San Juan Jaboleth (TRI), 2008
4. 2-1 win against LD Alajuelense (CRC), 2008
5. 2-1 win against Tauro FC (PAN), 2008
6. 3-1 win against Santos Laguna (MEX), 2008
7. 0-1 loss against Municipal (GUA), 2008
8. 2-1 win against Marathon (HON), 2009
9. 2-0 win against Cruz Azul (MEX), 2009
On a separate note, Toronto native Dwayne De Rosario elected (¿¿¿really???) to surrender his spot in the MLS all-stars starting 11 so that he could play for Toronto FC against the Puerto Rico Islanders on Wednesday night. But his presence didn’t help in the TFC loss. BTW: The MLS all-stars fell to Everton 4-3 in a penalty shootout (1-1 tie at end of regulation time).

That stunt that Gaudette pulled off with the gloves made me angry at him, and im a fan of his. I imagine how TFC fans felt. I later forgave him after his 2 big saves

he asked for a new pair of gloves in the middle of the match, and in the first half. anyway islanders stuck to the same strategy that got them to the semis last year and and it was fruitful once again, thanks to that great goal by jagdeosingh and to not conceding the entire game. Im so excited for Tuesday!!

Yeah, it was kind of dodgy in my opinion. Gaudette wasted time like always but he came up big when he needed to. Its great to see our club beat an MLS team. I just love it.
William, im gonna be at the game, cant wait!! Im pretty sure that there will be tickets available.

gaudette uses everything on his control to waste time when the islanders are ahead and/or when the other team has the momentum. Beer was thrown at him so he used that at his advantage. He told the referee that his gloves were soaked and asked for a new pair. LOL. gaudette is such a bully sometimes. i love him. it was puuure pleasure watching how TFC fans were getting out of control because of him.

This is one guy against a stadium full of TFC fans. Gaudette played the bully with all of them and got away with it. He is the one that absorbs the pressure and controls the crowd when playing away. And he loves it. Have you seen him smile while doing his tactics? Its diabolical.

I have to say though that Arrieta is the man. He had a solid game both on the defensive end and ofensive. The problem with this team is that they have such a hard time holding the ball but at the same time they managed to keep TFC in their own half for most of the game.
I think we need a good CF that can hold the ball and put balls through for the wingers. Our defense is our forte but when you give the ball up so many times, it just increases the odds of conceding.

I was at this game and never have I seen so many people booing one person for so long. Great keeper though
