Islanders trounce Aztex 4-1
By: BoriQa | June 12th, 2009
The Fabulous Islanders are back!!!
Jonathan Steele opened the game with a goal in the 5′, Cristian Arrieta scored 2 penalty kick goals (36′ and 70′); and Nicholas Addlery put the final nail on the Aztex coffin with a goal in the 87′, as the Puerto Rico Islanders trounced the Aztex 4-1 at Juan Ramón Loubriel, in front of just over 4,000 fans and on a nationally televised FSC broadcast.
It was the Islanders first “goleada” of the year, and the first time they score 4 goals this season.
Arrieta’s 2 penalty kick goals were his 3rd and 4th successful penalties in 3 consecutive games. The two goals give Arrieta, currently the Islanders scoring leader, 6 goals for the season.
Addlery’s goal was his 3rd in the season, yet his first since he scored twice in the Islanders season opening win over the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Jean Alexandre scored an awesome but controversial goal for Austin on the 45′+4 in stoppage time at the end of the first half. The 4th official showed 3 added extra minutes, and Austin scored in the 4th extra minute. The referee allowed the game to go for another 3 minutes, for a total of 7 extra minutes.
Kudos to the Aztex who played after an odyssey of a trip down to Puerto Rico, that due to extremely bad weather in the USA that saw their initial travel plans cancelled, and made it extremely complicated for them to arrive to Puerto Rico on Thursday. The Aztex alternate travel arrangements made stops in Houston, Philadelphia, Newark, New Jersey and New York before finally reaching Puerto Rico around lunch time on Friday.
It was the Aztex’s first trip outside of the continental United States. Next time they shouldn’t leave their travel arrangements for the last minute…
Tonight’s “goleada” came on the 1st year anniversary of last year’s first Islanders’ trouncing, a 3-0 win over the Carolina Railhawks at Juan Ramón Loubriel. The Islanders had 4 “goleadas” in 2008.

Considering Austin’s difficulties in getting to Puerto Rico, due to bad weather, I am surprised the Aztexs were able to play.

well, it has rained in puerto rico everyday for the past months, and that is nobodys fault. Nevertheless the pitch was in excellent condition, especially wen we think of the santos laguna game, in this past september. The Islanders dominance was clear all throught the game, the Austin goal, though controversial, was AWESOME!!! Yet in the second half, which i didnt see, as i was following online, and i had to leave, Austin showed their indiscipline by again, for a second time officialy, but for like 3rd or 4th time, foul inside the box. Anyway to, finish up im happy for the win and hope to go to the next home game.
