Islanders TIE with Cleveland City Stars
By: BoriQa | June 7th, 2009
The Islanders blew away their halftime advantage as the Cleveland City Stars played from two goals down to earn a 2-2 tie Saturday at Juan Ramón Loubriel.
Cristian Arrieta scored the first goal of the game in the 36th on a penalty kick after a foul by the City Stars goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap on Kendall Jagdeosingh in the box. Jagdeosingh himself scored a beautiful goal in the 40th against the Cleveland defense from 30 yards out.
It was Arrieta’s second successful penalty kick in as many games against the City Stars in Bayamón this weekend. On Thursday Arrieta faked left and fired right for the goal. Last night his shot squeaked by a diving Gilstrap and the left post for the score.
The City Stars cut the lead in half in the 51st after a shot from Pato Aguilera bounced on the Puerto Rican goalkeeper Bill Gaudette, with Ricardo Pierre-Louis finding the loose ball to tap it into the empty net. Aguilera himself tied the game 2-2 with a goal in the 55th minute.
Both sides were cut down to 10 men in the 66th minute, as each team had a player sent off due to red cards. Troy Roberts attempted a hard tackle on an Islanders player and received a straight red. Right after, Sandy Gbandi approached and pushed Roberts earning the Liberian-Puerto Rican his own red card.
The Islanders took 4 out of 6 points away from the City Stars on Cleveland’s first trip ever to Puerto Rico. The Boricuas are now in 4th place in the USL standings with 16 points, 7 points behind the leading Charleston Battery with 23 points.
The Islanders host the Austin Aztex newcomers next this Friday June 12 at Juan Ramón Loubriel. The Islanders have a 1-1 tie and a 1-3 loss on the road against the Aztex so far this year.
