The Puerto Rico Islanders coach Colin Clarke, and his assistant coach Adrian Whitbread, traveled to Argentina last week in seach of one or two potential players to complement the team in the upcoming 2009 season.
The Islanders official site reported in Spanish that Clarke and Whitbread traveled to Cordova and attended to a couple of games between Atlético Las Palmas and Instituto. Then they left for Buenos Aires where they met with a few contacts including one from the Jorge Cyterszpiler agency, which represents MLS players like Christian Gomes (Colorado Rapids) and Paulo Richetti (FC Dallas).
This week Clarke and Whitbread will travel to Rosario to meet with Mario Spirandelli, the owner of the largest soccer academy in Argentina, Academia Renato Cesarini, and will return to Buenos Aires to watch a game between the Arsenal and Racing Club reserve teams.
The Spanish Newspaper El Nuevo Día reported that as a consequence of this trip to Argentina, the team tryouts that were scheduled for this weekend (November 15) at the Albergue Olímpico in Salinas, Puerto Rico, will be delayed until the end of January 2009.
The Islanders will be playing the first leg at home in the 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals the week of February 24, 2009, and the second leg on the road the week of March 3rd.
The Islanders will also join the Sevilla FC Puerto Rico (winners of the 2008 PRSL championship) and participate in the 2009 CFU Champions Cup in March-May 2009.
