The game allowed the Islanders to workout some of their backup players and one trialist (Mohamed), as well as to welcome back Raphael “Mime” Ortiz to the team.

The 45-minute game was part of Guaynabo Fluminense’s preparation for the upcoming 2009 PRSL regular season that starts on May 23.

But under the rainy skies of Bayamón, Fluminense got a lot more than they could handle, as the Islanders scored 6 goals in less than 45 minutes. The PRSL team wasn’t able to resist the constant attack of the Islanders top guns. Fabrice Noël scored a hat-trick (3 goals), while Kendal Jagdeosingh and Martin Núñez scored 2 and 1 goals respectively.

We thank our sister blog FutbolBoricua for the information about the game as well as a for recorded video of the match.

Puerto Rico Islanders lineup:
Cris McClellan (GK), Kevon Villaroel, Karl Veris, Raphael “Mime” Ortiz, Alexis Rivera Curet, Mohamed, James Marcelin, Sean Fraiser, Kendall Jagdeosingh, Martín Núñez, Fabrice Noël

Guaynabo Fluminense Lineup:
The Hoppers won the aggregate by a 5-3 score.

A goal by Tamarley Thomas on the 15′ minute and another by Kelly Frederick on the 66th (Frederick’s third goal against Sevilla in the tournament), were enough to dismiss the 1st PRSL champion ever from their first international competition.

In other results, on Thursday March 26 both Inter Moengo Tapoe and W. Connection qualified to the next round of the CFU Champions Cup.

The W. Connection from Trinidad & Tobago gave Centre Bath Estate (Dominica) another trumping, this time 12-1, to move on to the next round with a whipping 17-1 agregate.

On the other hand, in spite of a 1-0 loss for InterMoengo Tapoe at home to Curaçao’s CSD Barber, the Surinamese team moved on to the next round, on account of their 3-1 win in the 1st leg, which gave them a 3-2 advantage in the aggregate score. InterMoengo Tapoe will face the 2007-08’s CFU Champions Cup 4th place Semifinalist San Juan Jabloteh of Trinidad & Tobago in the 1st leg of the quarter finals on April 13th.

Also tonight, the Haitian Cavaly Sportif defeated 1-0 the SV Britannic on the road in Aruba to eliminate the Dutch team from the tournament. Cavaly Sportif moves on to the quarterfinals with a 6-0 aggregate score, and will face the Trinidadian W. Connection in the next round.

Haiti’s Tepete FC defeated Alpha United 2-0 to reach the next round of Caribbean Club Champions Cup on Sunday April 5th. The 2nd leg was delayed one week due to air-travel difficulties by the Guyanese team. The teams tied 1-1 in the 1st leg of the match. Tempete will face the Green Hoppers from Antigua in the quarter finals on April 13th.

The Puerto Rico Islanders, 3rd place in the last CFU Cup, received a bye in the quarterfinals round and were given a spot directly into the semifinals, and will await for the three quarter final winners for the semifinals draw. The single-game semifinals will be played on May 15 in Trinidad. The final and third-place match will be also be played in Trinidad on May 17, with the top three teams in the CFU Club Champions Cup qualifying to the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League.

Sevilla PR dominated most of the game, but the few mitakes they made were enough for the Hoppers to come back and tie the game (3 Hopper goals out of 4 shots). Sevilla broke open the score on the 16th minute on a penalty kick by Julio Maya. Early in the 2nd half (48′) Sevilla PR doubled up the lead with a goal by Giovanni Figueroa. Then the Sevilla defense faltered allowing the Antiguans to come back.

Eight minutes later (56′) Kelly Frederick scored the first one for the Hoppers. Frederick scored again on the 74th minute to keep the game close (3-2), 5 minutes after Sevilla seemed to have broken the game open (with a 3-1 lead) with Yaikel Pérez’ goal on the 69th. The final goal of the game came seconds into the extra time when George Dublin took advantage of the last Sevilla mistake to score the tying goal of the match, and take away the win from the local team. It was not a pretty international debut for Sevilla PR.

In other results, the W. Connection and InterMoengo Tapoe both scored road wins last Thursday in their 1st leg matches. W. Connection from Trinidad & Tobago gave Centre Bath Estate (Dominica) a 5-0 trumping, while the Surinamese team (InterMoengo Tapoe) won 3-1 over Curaçao’s CSD Barber.

The Guyanese hosts Alpha United tied 1-1 last night against Haiti’s Tepete FC. Tonight, the 2nd Haitian team in the tournament, Cavaly Sportif hosted SV Britannic from Aruba and gave them a 5-0 trumping in Port au Prince.

The return-legs for this round will be played March 25-30, with the winners advancing along with San Juan Jabloteh of Trinidad & Tobago to the quarter finals in mid-April. The Puerto Rico Islanders received a bye in the quarterfinals round and given a spot directly into the semifinals.

The winners in the quarter finals will qualify to the semifinals to be played in Trinidad in May. They will be drawn along with the Puerto Rico Islanders for the single-game semifinals to be played on May 15. The final and third-place match will be also be played in Trinidad on May 17, with the top three teams in the CFU Club Champions Cup qualifying to the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League.

The Islanders starting lineup included: Justin Myers; Kevon Villaroel, Nigel Henry, Alexis Rivera, Andrés Cabrero, James Marcelin, Martín Núñez, Sean Fraser and Kendall Jagdeosingh, along with the recently acquired Kyle Veris and Argentinian trialist Lucas Cisneros.
Colin Clarke told El Nuevo Día “it gives us the oportunity to see some players that have not played enough time on the field, and others that are on trial”. He emphasized that Sevilla (PR) came to look for a good result against us, just like we did when we played the MLS a few weeks ago. We need to ensure we don’t fail. We need to be professional, keep posesion of the ball and get a good result”.
