Portland promoted to the MLS in 2011?

By: BoriQa | April 23rd, 2009

The Portland Timbers will be the 18th MLS franchise in 2011. This was announced this past March by MLS headquarters just a few days days after the announcement that Vancouver was awarded the 17th franchise also in 2011.

So next year will be the last season for the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Portland Timbers; the 2008 USL Champion and the team that placed dead last in the regular season. Funny way how the “top tier” MLS “promotes” teams…

But, was the move to allow Portland into the MLS and get rid of the USL-1’s North-West quadrant a wise one? Is Portland ready to rush and make things happen by the start of the 2011 season?

There are some indications there may be trouble in Timber land. A fellow blogger asks the MLS Commissioner: What’s It All About?

As part of the Portland MLS deal, there is a need to build two new stadiums. The team owners proposed to turn the downtown PGE Park, home of the Portland Timbers and the Portland Beavers (a minor league baseball team) into a soccer stadium that meets MLS requirements, and erect a brand new park for the Beavers. City planners recommended that the stadium be built where the Portland Memorial Coliseum sits in the Rose Quarter.

It sounded like a good plan, except that now that the MLS has awarded Portland the franchise, the city council may be having second thoughts. In a town hit hard by recession there may be other more challenging issues and priorities than building two new stadiums. Now the Portland Memorial Coliseum’s fate hangs in the balance.

According to city projections, based in a 25-year guarantee by the Timbers’ owners on rent payments and ticket taxes, the extra income that the city would generate by renovating the Coliseum for soccer and building a new baseball stadium would cover about a sixth of the $64.5 million in new debt that it plans to take on. Only this week the Mayor called a time-out on the Coliseum’s demolition, to study other options. We’ll wait and see how this story develops…

Regardless, the Timbers now want to play with the big MLS boys, where the other North-West USL-1 teams are going to (Seattle Sounders gone in 2009, Vancouver to go in 2011). Although with Portland’s storied tradition of mediocrity, they are lucky they were actually not relegated to the USL-2

Last year the Timbers had an alltime record of 97-44-82 [W-T-L] (308 GF, 271 GA, +37 GD), numbers that don’t look too bad until you look at their record in games with clubs other than Calgary, Edmonton and California: 77-42-81 (255 GF, 257 GA, -2 GD), a losing record. On the other hand against the former three expansion teams Portland fared very well: 20-1-2 (53 GF, 14 GA, +35 GD)

Don’t get me wrong, I think Portland is a far better than average team, and didn’t deserve to finish dead last in 11th place last year (3 points behind the 10th place Atlanta Silverbacks, a team that chose to take a timeout this season). The Timbers actually lead the Islanders alltime series 4-1-5, and have been close to unbeatable at home in Portland.

The Timbers last defeated the Islanders 1-0 in Oregon on April 17, 2008, in the Islanders 2008 season opener. But that Timber win was before the Islanders championship-form train took off in June 2008.

Prior to June 1st 2008, the Islanders were 1-2-3 [W-T-L], a .167 average, that included a loss and a tie to the Timbers. From June ‘08 on, the Islanders went 14-7-3 in the regular season, a .681 average, which included the first win ever for the Islanders in Portland. The Islanders are undefeated 4-1-0 against the Timbers at home in the Juan Ramón Lobriel in Bayamón.

This season the Islanders will play the Timbers in back-to-back home games in Bayamón on May 22nd and 24th. The teams third game of the season will be in Portland on July 23rd.

Hey Blacked Out, thanks for reminding Puerto Ricans of their colonial status. I’m sure they’d almost forgotten.

    You’re a real f’ing douchebag.

The MLS to Portland bid has a lot of moving parts to it, and along with the whole MLS bid, you have trying to build a triple AAA baseball park, while the current NBA team wants to build an entertainment complex in the same area while the city is dealing with the economic slowdown. The plan that was originally in place was a great mix of public and private investment, but since then, the location of the ballpark was moved, and the other moving parts were attached.

I firmly believe that the whole situation will work out of Portland, and they will get a plan in place to make it happen, although the process isn’t without some pain. I realize that PR has a great history of soccer support, and I have enjoyed following them in the Champions league, and felt you all got the shaft in the USL championship game last year with the location.

    @Islanders4Ever:
” congrats on having a very large and barely populated state – maybe that’s why Timbers’ attendance sucks.”

Yikes, my friend. You just made yourself look stupid. In 15 league matches last season, Portland averaged 8,567 in attendance (not including several exhibitions which were really well attended). In those same 15 league matches, PR averaged 4,423.

This whole thread is proof positive that the TA should take a giant step back and reevaluate their thin skin because this is ridiculous. Nothing quite as pathetic as responding to an article you don’t like with ignorant ad hominem attacks.

Can’t wait for this season’s Portland-PR match so I can see all the “progressives” regress into their xenophobic, “cantcha take a joke”, assholish selves.

Cap Ap, my intention is not to attack your team. It is to provide my blog readers (mostly Islanders fans) what is happening with the Portland to MLS situation.

Our newspapers do not publish enough about the Islanders, and you will imagine they publish even less about other teams in the league.

I’m just trying to fill an information void for our fans, and provide them stats that would normally not be available.

I also wish you team luck in the season (not against the Islanders though! :-) ), and I hope things work out with the stadiums swaps.

MannyJello: I guess some people talk without knowing the facts, right? Dont mind that guy.

There’s no promotion/relegation between USL and MLS. So yes, this move is about business (money/attendance). And well, sooner or later, Portland will find a way to build a new stadium.

Shankly and Paisley you are as much involved in this by adding to this happy concoction. Maybe you should take a step back and reevaluate your thin skin before casting dispersions such as, xenophobic and assholish around.

Thanks for the tip, new guy. Maybe when I get a little older I can see the humor in

    You’ll never be a state
    You’ll never be free
You’ll always be a US colony

Oh. Didn’t know that chant? Color me shocked. While you’re educating me about the history of the TA, maybe you could enlighten me on the hilarity of Vieques, Cerro Maravilla and all the other “perks” that are associated with not having free and full representation.

I’m sorry to hear that you feel that way about all of us, S&P…I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but I would support PR independence if that is what the Puerto Ricans wanted, and I feel that most TA (or Portlanders, or right thinking people) would feel the same. Many of us, though, don’t really know the first thing about the problems surrounding this issue and I don’t see what we would have to offer on the topic if we did. So, there’s that.

I’m sorry if you were offended by the chant, though I think you’d be making a mistake in thinking that the chant reflects actual political positions. I don’t actually want to burn Vancouver to the ground, or see all of the Seattle players burned alive (well, not most of the time), and I wouldn’t think it was right for the US to hold PR as a ‘colony’ against it’s will, if that were the case. Most of the time, these chants are just attempts to rile people up (opposing players, fans, etc). If I was a different person, I would point out the irony of your earlier ‘thin skinned’ comment, but I see your point. When a PR supporter came to our board last year and pointed out that they found the chant to be offensive, I stopped doing it out of respect for them and their country and culture and I also encouraged others to let it die.

If you ever make it out here for a game, or I make it out there, we’ll have to get a drink. Remember, it’s easy to judge people you don’t know…and that’s not a dis, that goes both ways in these conversations.

    C’MON YOU TIMBERS!

    VAMOS ISLANDERS!
    (Unless it’s vs. the Timbers…)

Find yourself a multi-millionaire owner. Double your attendance (that would out you at Timbers level today) and then you will have a shot at the MLS.

We don’t want to be in the MLS. Ask any real fan, any soccer fan. You’ll learn that MLS is just marketing.

Just a few facts so you don’t sound so silly next time. The proposed site of the new soccer stadium is PGE Park, formerly known as Civic Stadium. This is where the Timbers play now. It will be a renovation of the existing stadium. PGE Park will not be torn down. Memorial Coliseum on the other hand is a basketball arena wher the Portland Trailblazers used to play, located in what is called the “Rose Quarter.” One proposal is that the Coliseum be demolished to make way for a new baseball stadium for the Beavers. You’re welcome.

Who the hell are you calling new guy, your getting all interhooly you insignificant stream of piss, there that is an insult. You seem to want to martyr yourself on the cross of Puerto Rico national pride whilst calling the chants of the TA the nails to which you are crucified with. Hop off your high horse and come back to reality, football is football, any of us would treat you as we would treat any of our own. And as far as MLS goes, it is what it is, and it is the top tier league in the US. Bottom line.

Wow! Can you say: “haters”? haha. You know… I thought that our islands “status” would always be a part of footy debates once the club got bigger. Proves me right. Personaly i think its lazy,

The irony however, im actualy happy that these comments have risen. It only brightens the fact that we are growing. You know… coming from an island with arguably 0 football culture, a small/difficult market to break through and a small stadium but still we are making a name for ourselves.Im happy with that for sure. 2 years younger than the Timbers yet we know what playing in a final feels like.

So let them say what they want. Ita is America, wait! or is it Puerto Rico? Who cares we celebrate your holidays and ours so im cool with that. ;)

Instead of talking of people making comments about an island that they probably never visited ;) lets talk about la tropas next game. Has anyone here tried the USL streaming thinga-magiga they got going on? I cant make it to the game due to work. Is the streaming it any good?

The MLS, hmmm. At first i envied teams that got expanded but now i seriously think its gonna grow up to be a sad league. MLS is a business and a failing one at that. Its getting too big for its britches.

I rather our team be in a league that puts the game ahead of everything else instead of a “train without rails” league. So enjoy Portland Timbers, let it all in, dont leave a single stone unturned. Dont worry, always remember that you will eventualy come back to the USL along with the other future 19 teams. Well… maybe not all 19.

Fail, seriously the best you can come up with. Next will be the fact that your status as a territory has led to the need for reparations from the rest of the US citizens. Get a thicker skin.

I can understand the MLS distaste, I myself have misgivings about the league, but it is indeed a step onto a much larger international stage.

As for your islands status, never really entered into my equation, I see PR and an independent entity that just happens to be a US territory, take that for what you will. This was taken to an almost “racist” level and that is not my intent. As stated, I loved seeing PR’s success in the CL, but some of you seem to have a desire to make yourselves a martyr.

This comes down to the blog being a slam towards our team and we defend them. I do not agree with some of the opinions displayed here but then again do you all agree with all of your supporters?

    Hey pops.

As for BoriQa…mate, as you can see, people aren’t nearly as sanguine on the chances of getting that MLS team as some people might make it out to be. The Timbers Army are taking hits on almost a daily basis in the local news and it’s rubbed nerves a bit raw. Of the Islanders fans I know, Intru has registered on the talktimbers.com board and Felix/Mighty Mouse was always a good gent who got around a bit. I personally have no problem with you doing a piece on the Portland MLS effort or even negative opinions on it, but next time you might consider registering on that board and asking a few questions before quoting numbers and facts that might not be as solid as you think.

As for the rest, any time I see someone respond to an opinion piece they don’t like by taunting Puerto Ricans about their lack of representation and it’s on. Ignorance is no excuse. Otherwise, be up front and joke about the Puerto Rican soldiers who died in Iraq to provide Iraqis with rights they themselves are denied at home by the United States.

And with regards to the speculation about my opinions on “Puerto Rican national pride” and “my status” on “my island”, I had a good laugh.
