Islanders drop first in CCL group stage

By: BoriQa | August 18th, 2009

The Islanders failed to score in the 2-0 loss to the Columbus Crew in the opening match of the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League group stage action.

In less than half an hour of game, the Islanders already had 3 yellow cards: Cristian Arrieta (18′), Nick Addlery (19′) and Bill Gaudette 28′.

The Islanders best opportunity to score came on the 36′ when Petter Villegas missed a shot after a pass from Nick Addlery.

After a scoreless halftime; just within a minute of the Islanders making their first substitution of the night on the 57′ (Domenic Mediate for Petter Villegas), Steven Lenhart scored a goal (58′) for the Columbus Crew. Assist by C. Marshall.

Then on the 79′ Robbie Rogers scored the second Columbus Crew on a defensive mishap by Cristian Arrieta. Alejandro Moreno got the assist.

Colin “General” Clarke was missing from the bench as he was serving the 3rd and final game suspension due to an incident at the end of the CFU Championship game.

Kendall Jagdeosingh was missing from the roster due a dubious red card he received on the last CCL game against Toronto FC.

Hurray for the great fans in Columbus…6,161 in attendance. They’ve averaged 13,000 all season in MLS…yet when an important game shows up, half the fans disappear…what gives?

Well given the fact that it was a late WEEKDAY match most people work the next day. Plus we just had a match on Saturday. Props to Bill Gaudette he made some great saves.
Plus no one around the MLS knows the meaning of CONCACAF yet.

They don’t know the meaning of CONCACAF? What are they retarded? How can you not know?

No wonder everyone laughs at your league. If your fans are that clueless, then you all are truly pathetic

I saw the game too, unfortunately the Islanders coach made incorrect subtitutions on the 2nd half…. plus they had some players injured. This August 25th, PR will face Saprissa which is a very tough team in Central America. Good Luck Islanders!!!!!

it does not matter, as he will be in play for the next game. but i spoke with Jaggie (Jagdeosingh)about his red card, because i couldn’t believe that decision by the ref at all. so what had happened was that the other guy was talking a lot of S*** and then both of them went up to grab a ball by header and Jaggie kind of swatted him in a “chill out and get off” sort of way. but what the ref saw was a hardcore elbow move worthy of a damn red card.
